Carolina Raptor Center’s ambassador bird program is designed around the principles, mission statements, and philosophies of the International Association of Avian Trainers and Educators (IAATE.org), the use of positive reinforcement, and the idea that all bird residents at our facility will have optimum quality of life through quality housing, care, food, training, and enrichment.
HABITAT
Every enclosure is designed to fit the needs of each species and individual. Custom perching ensures foot health. Enclosure materials and substrates are designed to protect our animals from the elements and predators.
DIET AND NUTRITION
Each ambassador bird eats a variety of whole prey food that fulfills their daily dietary needs. This could include everything from superworms to quail to rats and mice. Multivitamin supplements are added along to make sure that birds are receiving all of their nutritional needs. Diets are species specific and are carefully prepared and delivered to each individual bird.
ENRICHMENT
Our Raptor Keepers provide our ambassador birds opportunities to use their senses and species adaptations to perform natural behaviors. This practice enriches their lives and
We use ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) and the Science of Ethology to provide exceptional welfare for all of our birds. Training gives our birds choice and control in their lives and allows them to use their senses, adaptations, and behavior to earn reinforcers
Why do we train birds at all?
Our dedicated medical staff and veterinarian perform routine health examinations to keep our ambassador birds at optimal health. Through health checks, daily monitoring, and understanding what the regular behavior of each bird looks like, we are able to catch medical problems quickly and take care of them before it is too late to reverse them.
